Super Bowl LV is finally here!
Two weekends ago, 4 of our NFL clubs faced off in the 2021 NFL Playoffs. The Buffalo Bills took on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium for the AFC Championship, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field for the NFC Championship.
We have had the privilege of working with all 4 of these clubs for several years, and we wanted to do something a little extra — a little digital surprise — for their fans, in case the teams won their championship games.
When you watch a championship game on TV, what do you see at the end, as the winning team lifts the trophy? Confetti. Confetti everywhere. We started brainstorming about how we could mimic that effect in a team app, and experimented with overlaying a motion graphic of confetti dynamically on the home-screen of a team app.
We took the idea to the 4 NFL clubs and they loved it. We worked with each club to design and implement a digital shower of confetti (in each team’s branding and colors, of course) with a transparent background. We quickly activated this confetti as soon as the AFC and NFC Champions were decided. The visual effect was striking — digital confetti automatically rained down on the home screens of the Buccaneers’ and Chiefs’ mobile apps, as soon as the two teams won. Of course, we made sure that users could “dismiss” the digital confetti when they wanted to, and that each user would see it only once. We activated this experience run for several hours, and only turned it off the morning after the championship games.
Our data shows us that tens of thousands of Kansas City and Tampa Bay fans watched the digital confetti in their team apps after their respective teams won the Championship games.
The video below shows what the effect looked like in the official mobile apps of your 2021 NFC and AFC Champions.
To the Chiefs and the Buccaneers: good luck today as you meet each other in Super Bowl LV, and thank you for the opportunity to work with you both on this unique digital confetti.
